Day Trips from Marrakech: Imlil, Ouzoud Falls, and the Atlas in a Day
By the Atlas Mountains Hike team
Not everyone has a week to spend in the mountains — and you don’t need one. Some of the best of the High Atlas is within a single day’s reach of Marrakech, back in the city in time for dinner. These are the day trips we run most, and what each is really like.
At a glance
| Day trip | Drive (each way) | Effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imlil & Aroumd | ~1.5 hrs | Easy–moderate walk | Families, first-timers, acclimatising |
| Ouzoud Falls | ~2.5–3 hrs | Easy walking | Greenery, waterfalls, a relaxed day |
| Zipline + Imlil | ~1.5 hrs | Easy + a zipline | Adventure and culture in one day |
All are full days from Marrakech with a local guide, lunch included, and you’re back in the city by evening.
Marrakech to Imlil and Aroumd
The classic. A scenic drive south through Tahanaout and Asni brings you to Imlil (1,740 m), the trailhead village for Toubkal. From there it’s a gentle guided walk up to Aroumd, through walnut groves and terraced fields, with the high peaks rising ahead. Lunch is in a Berber family home — tagine, bread, mint tea — before you wander back down.
It’s the perfect taste of the mountains for families, first-timers, or anyone acclimatising before a bigger trek. See the Marrakech-to-Imlil day trip.
An easy day above Imlil suits all ages — and makes a great warm-up for a longer climb.
Ouzoud Falls
About three hours from Marrakech, on the edge of the Middle Atlas, the Ouzoud Falls tumble 110 metres in tiers through olive groves and red rock. You can walk down to the pools, ride a small boat near the base, and watch for the Barbary macaques that live in the trees around the gorge. It’s greener, lusher, and more relaxed than the high mountains — a brilliant contrast day. See Marrakech to Ouzoud Falls.
Zipline, argan, and a Berber lunch
For a day that packs in adventure and culture, our zipline trip is hard to beat: a traditional breakfast, a visit to a women’s argan oil cooperative, a session on the zipline at Amanar adventure park, a guided walk near Imlil, and lunch in a Berber home with Mount Toubkal on the horizon. One day, three completely different experiences. See the Atlas zipline day trip.
A few honest tips
- Start early. The drives are part of the experience, and an early start means cooler walking and fewer crowds at the falls.
- Bring layers. Marrakech can be hot while the mountains are cool — and vice versa in winter.
- Wear proper shoes. Even the gentle walks are on rocky mountain paths, not pavements.
- Go with a local guide. The landscapes are stunning, but the stories — who lives here, how the land is farmed, what the villages are called — are what you’ll remember.
Which day trip is right for you?
- Travelling with kids or older relatives? The Imlil & Aroumd walk is gentle, endlessly scenic, and easy to shorten.
- Want green and water rather than high mountains? Ouzoud Falls — bring a swimsuit in summer for the pools, and a zoom for the macaques.
- After a hit of adrenaline with culture too? The zipline day combines a thrill, an argan cooperative, and a Berber lunch with Toubkal on the horizon.
- Acclimatising before a Toubkal climb? Do the Imlil day a day or two before your trek — a perfect, gentle warm-up at altitude.
What to bring
- Comfortable walking shoes (paths are rocky, not paved)
- Layers — Marrakech and the mountains can differ by 10°C or more
- Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sun cream) and a water bottle
- Cash in dirhams for tips, café stops, and crafts
- A swimsuit for Ouzoud in summer; a light waterproof in spring/autumn
More than a day?
If a day in the Atlas leaves you wanting more (it usually does), it’s an easy step up to an overnight Berber villages trek or a Toubkal climb. Many of our guests start with a day trip and come back for the summit.
